What does “بحب” (baḥebb) mean in Egyptian Arabic?

In Egyptian Arabic, بحب (baḥebb) means “I love” or “I like,” and the little ب (b-) at the front does real work: it marks the everyday present. The same pattern runs through every person: بيحب (biyḥebb), “he loves,” and بتحب (bitḥebb), “she loves” or “you love.” Standard Arabic says أحب with no b-, so hearing it is a quick sign you’re listening to spoken Egyptian.

A second verb after بحب drops the b-: أنا بحب أرسم (ana baḥebb arsem), “I like to draw.” That’s how the lesson moves from أنا بحب الرسم (“I love drawing”) to أنا بحب أرسم حيوانات (“I like drawing animals”), and it ends by lining the forms up: أنا بحب، هو بيحب، هي بتحب. The same b- is in بشتغل (“I work”) and بشرب (“I drink”).
